Question 6: Given the poor prognosis for their baby, what is the best ethical option for the medical management of Tanya and Tyrone’s baby?

Choose the BEST response to Question 6 from the options below:

A. An aggressive approach would involve invasive support and resuscitative measures. A palliative approach would place the emphasis on providing only comfort measures. There are benefits and burdens involved with both options. As the parents, Tanya and Tyrone have the responsibility and authority to decide which option is best for their baby.
B. As parents, Tanya and Tyrone have an ethical obligation to provide all available means to try to prolong their child’s life regardless of probable outcomes or costs.
C. Even aggressive care is unlikely to be successful because the overall likelihood of the child surviving and developing normally is poor. Therefore, the parents are within their legal and moral rights, and should be encouraged, to direct that only comfort measures be provided to their child.
